Model-driven app
Concept
Power Apps app type generated from the Dataverse data model, with forms, views and business process flows laid out automatically.
Description
A model-driven app is one of the two app types in Power Apps. Instead of designing each screen by hand, the maker builds on the Dataverse data model, and the app is generated from it with forms, views and business process flows laid out automatically. This suits data-heavy business applications with many related tables, where consistency matters more than free layout.
The concept is related to Power Apps, the platform in which it is built, and to Dataverse, whose tables, relationships and security roles form its foundation. The counterpart is the canvas app, which starts from a free screen design. Choosing between them depends on the requirements, such as how much structure, security and governance an application needs.
Three M365.FM episodes are linked. "Canvas Apps vs Model-Driven Apps - Simply Explained" explains the differences between the two ways to build business applications. "SharePoint Lists vs Model-Driven Apps: Avoid Overbuilding" warns that model-driven apps lend enterprise credibility but that Dataverse brings licensing, security matrices, solution layers and governance overhead to problems that may only need a shared list and a few notifications. "Power Apps - Simply Explained" introduces Power Apps as a low-code platform for custom business applications without the complexity of traditional development.
